This document provides information on BetterWriters which was not available when the manual went to press.
General Notes:
Font/DA Mover: (ImageWriter printers only) Apple's Font/DA Mover application no longer ships on the BetterWriters drivers disk. If you need to install the Image Pro screen fonts under System 6.0.x, you can get the Font/DA Mover application from your original Apple System disks (Utilities 2). If you need further assistance with the Font/DA Mover, consult your Apple Macintosh User's manual.
Draft Mode Printing: For best results, Fractional Widths must be turned on IN THE APPLICATION for the Image Pro fonts to work correctly. Please refer to your application manual for information on how to turn this feature on. The Application Notes section in the Appendix of the BetterWriters User's Manual may also contain information on setting Fractional Widths within your application.
ImageWriter I using the Image Pro font: The ImageWriter I printer does not support the Danish characters "Æ", "æ", "Ø", or "ø" which are available using our Image Pro fonts. If you use these characters in your document when printing in draft mode with the Image Pro font they will print as spaces, and the line layout will be slightly different from what is shown on the screen. These Danish charaters are available from the ImageWriter II and ImageWriter LQ printers.
HP DeskWriter outline fonts: BetterWriters supports the industry-standard outline font formats from Apple and Adobe in the form of TrueType or Adobe Type Manager fonts. The HP outline fonts which come with the HP DeskWriter printer are not supported by BetterWriters. You should install and use only TrueType or Adobe Type Manager fonts for best results with BetterWriters. TrueType is built-in to System 7, or is available free-of-charge from your local Apple dealer as an INIT which can be added to System 6.0.x. Adobe Type Manager is also available from your local Apple dealer, or by contacting Adobe directly.
Virtual Memory with the HP DeskWriter: The HP DeskWriter printer uses a method of handshaking which is not supported under System 7 when Virtual Memory is turned on. Because of this limitation of the printer, you should make sure that Virtual Memory is turned off when using the BetterWriter DW driver. This feature can be turned off in the Memory Control Panel.
Application Notes:
Intuit, Quicken 3.0: When printing cheques, Quicken will only print one cheque to a page. If you are doing a run of cheques (2 or more) selecting the Sheet feeder option in Quicken's Check Set-up window (available under the File menu) will make it so that Quicken will print more than one cheque to a page.
Mark of the Unicorn, Professional Composer: Make sure "Tall Adjusted" is selected if available. A minimum of 2 Mb of RAM is required in your computer to print properly with ATM from Professional Composer.
Troubleshooting Notes:
Lines not printing: When printing from the BetterWriter SW driver (StyleWriter) with Darker OFF, every other pixel line does not get printed. Therefore, one pixel hairlines may disappear. To see them, turn Darker ON.
Text is printing 'blocky': For best results, we recommend that you use a standard outline font format such as Apple's TrueType or Adobe's Type Manager. TrueType is built-in to System 7, or is available free-of-charge from your local Apple dealer as an INIT which can be added to System 6.0.x. Adobe Type Manager is also available from your local Apple dealer, or by contacting Adobe directly. (See also "HP DeskWriter outline fonts" above)
If your printer fails to print correctly, please check that the dip switch settings in your printer are set as follows. These are the default settings for each particular printer and should work well with both the manufacturer's original driver and BetterWriters.
* The StyleWriter and DeskWriter printers do not have any dip switches which need to be set.
* If you are using a sheetfeeder or envelope tray with your printer, make sure that the appropriate dip switches are correctly set as described in your printer's manual. Those settings will likely differ from the settings displayed here.
* NOTE: Do not alter the settings on your printer for dip switches which are grayed-out.
